it took me a couple of years get invited to christophe de groot’s (aka circadian rhythms) homebase, and a couple more years to dive into his sonic archive. but time tells and basic moves 02 is what came out. the two tracks were recorded at earguard studio in brussels around 1996, at a moment when his interest was moving away from club music towards other golden musical horizons. “frequency” is a macro tech-house track in mid tempo.
i’m super happy i could archive it on wax because we almost fucked up the master dat tape by blowing up the player during a marathon listening session at his place. we had to open the device, unroll the tape across his house (full of records) and fold it back into the mini dat cassette. after a few hours and twenty metres of tape, the problem was solved and the tracks archived: “a dose of authenticity at a time of post-counter-cultural stagnation”. “house speaker call” originated in proto-techno forms. christophe never sees techno as a type of music but as a process. as a producer, collector and deejay he always dives deep into authentic forms of electronic music. deg’s antic personality shines out in the middle of the harsh beat-driven electro/techno track like a hopeful melody passing by on its elliptic orbit. tune your cells into his vibrations and get ready for these two timeless club tracks.

lyon-based beatsmith ethyène has patented a certain style of mid-tempo house music applying a french touch aesthetic to disco, r&b and hip-hop sample references. through releases on longtime underground favorite kolour ltd and upstart labels like kyoku, as well as contributions to his own moonrise hill material, the frenchman has quickly built a sought after discography. his collaboration with better listen comes at an interesting time, as he seems to really be refining his sound, maturing sonically and honing the synthesis of the aforementioned influences to something nicely unique. the playin with fire ep is a deliciously bittersweet four track affair. the a1 slot sees e joining forces with his homie, the much acclaimed folamour, for the superlative why my love. meanwhile, loneliness of the shadow dancer- continues the r&b cream vibes, combining a classic head-nodding hip-hop flip with a soul chorus. the b-side gets a bit moodier, with the title track climatically building on hypnotically deep riffs and vocals and i sold yayo to buy kicks serving as the bob james-esque closer. the package is a cohesive reflection of a pensive and slightly anguished mindstate, with boom bap cultural influences and his familiar philadelphia streets functioning as the canvas. dont be surprised if this record serves as a point of stylistic elevation for the young producer, with plenty more of this new ammunition in the chamber. and you know the saying: if you play with fire, you might turn into a scorching hot phoenix.

dj raw sugar is a native of berlin, but has done a 6 year stint in new zealand and now resides in perth. his productions are deep and raw house beats mixed with jazz, boogie, disco, funk and soul. over the years he has put out music via other people s labels like gazeebo international, midnight riot and ism, but is now taking matters into his own hands via love sexy records - a label he has just started. the debut release kicks off with a piece from the man himself! it s a sweet and sultry slice of disco. inkswel, also australian based, takes up remix duty taking the track in a more club-ready direction. slow goodness all over!

it s all going on for cervo at the moment. having just launched the banana hill label with an excellent record from majid bekkas (that he also did an edit for), the uk-based producer has now been snapped up by marcel vogels lumberjacks in hell label to drop more of his worldly edit science. on rhythm leads the charge with confidence on the a-side, using a bubbling, afro-infused disco-funk source and making it lean and mean for the floor. there s a distinctly nigerian lilt to the guitars that cluck away through dancing dream, but it s accompanied by bright chiming chords and a solid beat that will stand up to any contemporary house jam. banku is even more explicitly modern, although still layered up with gorgeous vocals and percussion from africa

j.a.k.a.m is japanese artist takashige miyawaki, a long standing producer commonly found on crosspoint records. on this release for the ever intriguing malka tuti label miyawaki draws on a thrilling spread of influences to make a truly soul-stirring track. at times the vocals lean towards a middle eastern lilt while the saxophone burns with the fire of the post punk era. with monolithic drum hits, yearning violin and plenty more besides, wabi sabi is a many-headed beast of a track. moscoman takes the original and simmers it down to a more focused but no less exotic tribal house workout.

fresh from the success of their ‘past / present / future’ release, we march on, with berlin-based italian christopher ledger the man responsible for their label’s 41st release. the ‘percezione and retrospettiva’ ep sees ledger in flying form, as he props up with two dexterous, thoughtfully executed records that speak volume of his ability to craft atmospheric sounds. opening up the release is the sounds of ‘retrospettiva 2’, a future leaning techno jam that again wonderfully fits the brouqade aesthetic. clearly indebted to sci-fi spheres, this one is very much cut from a detroit cloth, with a steely finesse that lurks from the get go. a track that brings the listener on an endless journey, it comes some deep harmonic vibes. all things told, this is an ep of various contrasting sounds, ledger’s debut for brouqade is a stunning example of what can happen when producers think outside the box. the b side consists of ‘percezione attiva’. harmonic, blissful tones abound throughout, made all the more meaningful by a slew of gentle, melancholic piano chords that really pull on the heartstrings. a light and hazy experimental piece, the track forces parallels with other masters of suspense. culminating with a more traditional 4/4 vibe, this unusual turn only enhances the producer’s standing as a man willing to take risks.

consistency and a diverse but functional aesthetic have kept berlin based record label vakant ahead of most imprints operating in the same space. having released records since 2004 they have focused on working with only a select number of artists as they believe this is the only way to endure in a scene which is susceptible to trends, with premiesku being part of the family as well as the likes of dewalta and avatism. having already released a highly successful ep on the label in 2014, and more recently being a part of the labels latest anniversary compilation, 10 years vakant, the romanian trio return with a driving four track ep. this ep features catchy melodies, vivid emotion and driving, floor-focussed percussion, which consists of three original tracks as well as the ever-dependable varhat stepping up on remix duties. one of frances most exciting exports, varhat has already released a string of impressive records on labels such as mulen and howl. his interpretation of cu balans brings a signature sound which portrays a lighter more bouncy feel to the track. premiesku which consists of livio & roby and george g are a romanian joint alias that have been releasing and performing together for over nine years. their widespread influence on the flourishing underground scene is no secret, their innovative live performances, and constant flow of cutting edge productions remain one of their nation s leading lights in the field.

noir jungle part ii finds the italian producers cardace & perazzini once again demonstrating originals and exciting modes of expression, not to mention the extraordinary level of detail in their music. it rounds the project off, with yet more unpredictable diversions of their immersive sound design to paint a vivid and unique landscape at its most dynamic framework. swinging plans places the drums at the forefront of the mix, using incredible layers of brushed, rolling an expressive live recordings to create a truly thrilling experience that speaks to the deepest human instinct for rhythmic sound.

astray is the sublabel of away, berlin. away, berlin’s party series and the eponymous vinyl label celebrate the launch of its sublabel astray with the road force ep by discrete circuit. while away with previous contributions from joe claussell, mr. ties, and move d leans more to the housier side of things, astray will take a different path by taking some darker, techno-centered steps. following the idea only to release productions by both label founders, discrete circuit and h4l, as well as unique collaborations which either of them will form with outside artists, astrays second ep will premiere the joint studio work of discrete circuit and dj/producer blind observatory.

bruno pronsato returns with his first new artist album in 6 years. entitled us drag, it’s the follow-up to 2011’s critically acclaimed lovers do— lauded by pitchfork as a “striking and massive statement,” and decorated with a 4.5/5 rating by resident advisor. the new record, which finds the ex-punk rock drummer exploring dense, interlocking rhythms and unorthodox tuning systems, was recorded in berlin during the second half of 2016, and features a collaboration with liars’ frontman angus andrew. after the vast, complex arrangements of his previous albums, the 9 recordings on us drag are relatively more upfront and direct, with a particular focus on bells, tuned percussion and the sequential circuits six-trak synthesizer (used to create many of the album’s synth parts). pronsato’s ongoing collaboration with yonatan levi continues, with the israeli bassist appearing on the album’s second track

the second part of the jacob f. desvarieux anthology on endless flight brings three more productions of the fabled french zouk veteran with roots in guadeloupe.
the song “sika” by georges décimus, bass player of desvarieux’s band kassav, features outer-national synth works driven by salsa-like percussions and sweet steel-drum melodies, dancing around the seducing zouk guitar chords of desvarieux. a truely moving psychedelic zouk gem, that is for the first available on vinyl only since its release on georges décimus’s solo debut mini-album “la vie” in 1983.
the second song “avèou doudou” was firstly released in 1985 and was written by the martinique born zouk star and former kassav keyboarder jean-claude naimro. his tune spreads feathery synth-laden caribean boogy vibes, enlarged by his tempting voice and more zouk guitar magic by desvarieux. the third gem comes from the zouk pioneer patrick saint-éloi, listens to the name “do bay lan main”, was never re-released since 1984, features the former kassav singer saint-éloi on the microphone, electric piano, organ and mini moog and gets once again softly heated by jacob f. desvarieux’s enchanting zouk guitar virtuosity. as already on the jacob f. desvarieux: anthology pt 1. release, japanese producer for special affairs kuniyuki delivers a unique edit. his version of “sika” is made for eternalness dance floor moments. the steel drums dance with more magic than in the original. propelled by spaced out synth-sounds, echoed drums and the discreet guitar chords of desvarieux, kuniyuki’s version of “sika” is ready to be a mind-expanding summer hit on all open minded dancefloors around the globe.
